How to Ensure a Smooth Lucky Puppy Nail Experience for Your Pet
Lucky Puppy Nail Specialists, renowned for their gentle touch and expert techniques, offer a dedicated experience to ensure your canine companion’s comfort and well-being. If you’re preparing for your very first visit, this guide will help you navigate the process, ease your worries, and maximize your dog’s first visit.
Before Your Appointment
- Vaccination Records: Check your vaccination records, we require that all dogs have a current rabies vaccination to maintain a safe environment for everyone. Puppies should have at least two sets of vaccinations before their first appointment.
- Preparing Your Dog: On the day of your appointment, make sure your dog is well-rested and has had a chance to relieve themselves. Avoid feeding them right before the visit, which can help with nerves and comfort.
- Medication and Health Issues: Please inform our team of any health concerns before your appointment so we can provide appropriate care. If your dog is on regular medication or requires medication for vet visits or anxiety, contact us prior to your appointment to discuss the best approach.
- Gathering Supplies: We have a wide selection of treats, peanut butter and cheese but should your fur kid have a favorite goodie, toy, or comfort items you are welcome to bring them along. Familiar items can make the experience less stressful.
- Review Policies: Familiarize yourself with Lucky Puppy’s policies, including cancellation and rescheduling (we require a 24 hour notice for full details review our cancellation policy here).

Arrival at Lucky Puppy Nail Specialists
- Warm Welcome: Our friendly staff greet you in a clean, cheerful space and handle each puppy with care and patience. Dog-to-dog contact is not allowed; please give other dogs space during arrival and departure. We are happy to help you load, unload, or escort you as needed.
- Introduction to the Space: You and your dog will be escorted to your own private space designed to be both hygienic and soothing. Each dog is given a moment to sniff around and acclimate before the session begins.
- Meeting the Specialist: Your nail specialist will introduce themselves. They may use treats, calm voices, or gentle petting to help your dog relax, or simply give your dog space if needed.
- Review and Expectations: You’ll be asked to confirm your details and discuss any preferences or concerns you have. If your puppy has specific traits (like fear of handling or sensitivity to touch), now is the time to mention them. We will also thoroughly explain our process so you will know what to expect during the nail shortening session.
The Nail Care Experience
- Tools and Techniques: Lucky Puppy Nail Specialists uses a proprietary 2-part filing system, one for shortening and one for smoothing.
- Gentle Handling: We prioritize comfort and safety by placing your dog in a hammock system that supports their body, letting their feet rest on the grooming table. This allows us to safely file and smooth each nail. If your dog is wiggly or anxious, additional team members may be needed to assist and keep them safe.
- Treats: Since you will be with your dog during service, we encourage you to assist by offering words of encouragement and goodies – peanut butter, cheese or treats.
- Shortening and Smoothing: The nail shortening is done gradually, with patience and attention. Each nail is safely filed to the length of the quick within the nail, then the edges are smoothed with our smoothing tool to prevent snags.
- Brief Pauses: If your dog gets anxious, specialists are prepared to pause, and allow time for the dog to settle before proceeding again. The session moves at your pet’s pace.
- Paw Health Check: The specialist may inspect for redness, swelling, or foreign objects lodged in the paw pads, offering advice if anything unusual is found.
Aftercare Tips and Advice
- Post-Service Treats: After service we may again offer additional treats, toy play and gentle pets reinforcing a positive association.
- Feedback and Guidance: The specialist will share feedback on your dog’s nails and overall paw health and may offer tips for keeping nails in shape between visits.
- Scheduling Follow-Up: You’ll receive recommendations for how often to return based on your dog’s anatomy, age and activity level. Consistent nail care keeps paws healthy and avoids future problems.
- Nail Aftercare: Your dog’s quicks are exposed. In the next 24 hours, the quicks will dry up and recede back into the nail. Please be mindful of that during the next 24 hours and DO NOT allow your pup to do any abrasive running on asphalt or concrete as it puts them at risk of injuring their quicks. If your dog pulls on leash walks, please also refrain from walks on asphalt or concrete for the next 24 hours. They are okay to walk/run in grass, dirt or sand.
- Questions Welcome: Staff are happy to answer any questions.
